Earlier this morning Sam Webb of Scout.com reported that Michigan Wolverines senior center Jack Miller will forgo his senior season to focus on his studies.
This comes as a big blow for the Wolverines offensive line, as the starting center job was essentially Miller's to lose.
He has not spoken publicly about his decision as of yet.
Miller was given a redshirt his freshman season, and appeared in six games during his second year with the team. As a redshirt sophomore, Miller started four games at center.
This past season, was Miller's breakout year, surrounded by an improved line he made 12 starts for the Wolverines.
The offensive line for the Wolverines has been their main point of struggles the past few years, but last season showed major improvement,
The 2015 Wolverines bring back a bevy of talented linemen, but Miller was a mainstay at center this last year. Most of the line is capable of moving around and playing different positions but filling the leadership role that Miller held is not going to be an easy task.
Mason Cole returns after playing a full season at left tackle, the first true freshman to do so. The Wolverines will also bring back Erik Magnuson, Ben Braden, Kyle Kalis, and Graham Glasgow, all of which have seen a considerable amount of playing time.
New head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator/line coach Tim Drevno could look to incoming freshman, and legacy Jon Runyan Jr. to fill the void in the middle of the line left by Miller.
Grant Newsome and Nolan Ulizio also come into Ann Arbor this fall as highly regarded recruits.
Miller deciding to leave the program is an unfortunate blow for a team looking to improve the run game, and the offensive line, especially after a slightly promising season last year. Despite the loss of Miller, I do believe the line will still be much improved, and the Wolverines will be a force up front this season.
