Its More Than Just A Sticker, Its Justin Boren

It seems like this is a larger topic then at first blush. Maybe it's the off-season that's getting to people. Maybe we just have nothing better to concern ourselves with right now. Spawn of MZone was unhappy with the messing of perfection. Varsity Blue thinks let bygones be bygones...and takes a shot across the MBN bow with a jab at our title (thanks for that). And WLA responds in kind.

I can live with a Michigan man adorning his helmet with Florida State, Northwestern, Richmond, Nebraska and Georgia Tech stickers for a senior bowl. If Morgan Trent wants to do that, so be it. It's his helmet that he earned with 5 years of blood, sweat and tears playing football for the Michigan Wolverines. Like Spawn of MZone, I see the Michigan helmet as a icon that needs no such improvement. But given that senior bowls are famous for players doing such things to their head-gear...I can accept it. The Michigan helmet that we see on Saturdays in the fall is much more important than the ones we see in senior bowls in January.

I do not pretend though that seeing a Buckeye sticker on a Michigan helmet didn't make me seriously question the integrity of the man who's wearing said helmet. I know he's given everything to to Michigan and its fans over 5 years, and his character is intact as far as some bloggers are concerned. I wish I was able to just turn the other cheek and say no big deal.

We've never made an attempt here to say we honestly like Morgan Trent. Is he a good football player? Sure he is. He's been the starting corner back for Michigan since whenever...including two coaching staffs that saw him as the best option. Did he miss big plays and make bonehead mistakes? Sure. And I would argue that making a big mistake as a corner back is much worse than making a big mistake as a defensive lineman. You're on an island out there by yourself. It comes with the territory. But there is a reason tOSU fans are sad to see him leaving.

Until the East-West Shrine game last weekend, I never considered him anything less than a noble and faithful Michigan man. I do not know him personally, nor have I ever even met him. So for me to cast my character insults may seem resentful. But how much more worse is it to see a player who I truly cheered for, basically slap Michigan fans in the face with a solitary Buckeye sticker on his Michigan helmet. If Michigan won a few times over the last 5 years against tOSU, then maybe I could see it as something of a light-hearted joke. But we haven't, so I'm bitter.

Like I said, it's not the other stickers that bothered me. Not at all actually, just the one sticker of Michigan biggest rival. And so what if bloggers or fans want to be critical? How do you think Bo would have felt had he saw Morgan Trent's helmet this past weekend? Call me old-fashioned, but I think it was a disgrace.

Morgan Trent may get drafted in the last round of the NFL draft and go on to have a Tom Brady-like career. Or he may get cut after being picked up as an undrafted free-agent. Who really knows. I don't really care now. But there is a distinct difference between what is preceived as right and wrong. And to me, what he did was just wrong.

  1. Maybe Morgan Trent just wants to advocate for reform of our drug laws, did you ever think of that?

And round and round we go with the irrational bitterness about a fucking sticker. Let.It.Go.

  2. Yes, round and round. That's kind of what we do best. As far as I see it, Michigan fans should be pissed. When I saw Trent's little helmet decoration, I was in a room with 4 other Michigan fans and we all had the same reaction.

Maybe at WLA things are alright with the ship, but from my perspective, Michigan is slipping. Especially to tOSU. First we can't beat them, then Pryor, then Boren, and now our own players are in on the joke.

I'll let it go when we finally beat them again...whenever that may be.

You need to realize that players don't take this as seriously as you. You really think that a Wolverine player and Buckeye are incapable of being friends?

There a passage from "Fever Pitch", when, after watching his beloved Arsenal lose to Man U, the author runs into 3 Arsenal players at the bar, partying. There he is, miserably drowning his sorrows, and he sees three Arsenal players laughing, yelling, and having fun. It's what they do, and they're not going to limit their social interactions because of it.

  4. I am sure WLA will have something to say about this.

  6. First of all, losing Pryor...seriously? RR had a month and a half to recruit him and the fact that he had Michigan in his top 2 or 3 is pretty impressive.

I can't believe you pansies get so worked up over a Buckeye sticker gracing "the most iconic helmet in CFB history." This is pathetic, and I know this has been said a million times but he is a 22-23 year old kid having fun with people who went through the same things he did.

I hope all of the seniors who participate in the these all-star games next year do the same thing so you can write..
"May your football career die a horrible tragic death." About Brandon Graham, asshole.

  7. Regardless, I don't think anyone has to worry about Morgan trent's pro career being long lasting. I wish him the best, but uh... he isn't very good.

  8. First of all, players do take it just as seriously as I do. Take a look at some video of the Ten Year War.

Fever Pitch was a story (and not a very good one). I know exactly what you're talking about though. But the point is those were professional baseball players being paid millions of dollars. Not college football players (mostly) playing for the love of the game. There is a huge difference there. But I see your point.

    ThWard:

I always thought the Hatfield-McCoy wing of this Rivalry resided exclusively in the nutjob wing of OSU fandom. At least that's how I explained it my wife when adults in Cincinnati dropped an F-bomb at her in a mall when she wore a U of M shirt, or when two grown men at the 2002 OSU-UM game whizzed full beer cans at some females I was with, and then sucker punched me when I, you know, suggested they were a-hole thugs and should tone it down. That it was just a college rivalry.

But, um, yeah, 1000 curses on you, Morgan Trent.

    This is beyond stupid.

First, if we grant everything you just said...WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? Do you honestly think writing multiple blog posts spitting on Morgan Trent is going to make anything better? Is the next great QB or OL recruit going to take a second look at Michigan because some fuckwit blogger went crazy...over a fucking helmet sticker? Are current players going to go "whoah, we were slacking for awhile and we were just letting OSU beat us, but have you SEEN the blogs? They are pissed! Now we have to beat the buckeyes!"...?

Second, I don't know what you mean by "players are in on the joke." Do you honestly think that Morgan Trent thinks his career and his time at UM was a "joke" simply because he never was on a team that beat OSU? Do you honestly think he believes his alma mater is a "joke"? What is the "joke" that you are referring to?

To sum up: you are unrepentantly angry at a guy who has, as far as we know, given 4+ years of his best efforts and contributed as much as he can to succeeding for his/your/our team...all because of a fucking helmet sticker. Wow.

  11. To think that Trent didn't know exactly what he was doing when he put that sticker on the front of his helmet is naive. He knew what it would insinuate.

And King, what did he do? Signal to the UM fan base's fringe that he doesn't share their dose of crazy? That he's just having fun at a bowl game, meeting other people who have had shared experiences?

Honestly, this is such an OSU-fan-type topic, I'm stunned so much ink is being spent on it on Michigan blogs.

Um, I don't know what it insinuates. What exactly does it mean? Please spell it out for me, because I'm an idiot.

Brad sit down, I need to inform you of some news that you may find rather distressing:

Crisler imported the winged helmet from Princeton. I know, I know. But there's more.

Bo Schembechler.... that's right... Glen E. 'Bo' Schembechler.... got his start in coaching... at Ohio State! Put that gun down! Hear me out! There's more... he went to grad school in Columbus! And he had a golden pants pin! Which he kept even when he coached at Michigan!

Don't do it Brad! There's still plenty to live for! We'll find you some other trivial mundanities through which you can reflect your superficial sense of self-worth!

'Fever Pitch' wasn't 'a story.' It was non-fiction. And it was a great British book that was eventually turned into a shitty American movie.

I've seen Michigan players at Ann Arbor bars after losses. They're disappointed, to be sure, and the mood around town is pretty somber after a loss, but that doesn't mean you can't go out and have a laugh with your friends. Life goes on..

  18. I don't care how you feel about Michigan, Morgan Trent, Me, anything. If your a Michigan fan, Sparty fan, tOSU fan, you're all welcome to comment here...even anonymously.

This blog is wide open. I trust in my readers to conduct themselves with a certain sort of civility when posting.

But this is getting out of control. Keep your foul language on you own site Wolverine Liberation Army members.

You criticize me for going crazy over a sticker, but it's you all who are trolling the Michigan blogs commenting on how stupid we all are for having our own opinions.

I can handle the comments, but please...keep the bad language on your blog.
